  James sat forward. “What happened in Richmond?”

  Garnett passed the bottle. “What does Richmond have to do with a great infection?”

  “Richard said you left the morning after he arrived.”

  “There was no reason to stay once Mirisa’s father showed up and indicated he would be taking her and Matthew to Washington. I really like that man.”

  “Her father decided to send her and Matthew home a few days after you left. He came to Washington giving Dominic the keys for the apartments before heading to New York. I don’t know what happened or why he made the decision but Dominic wasn’t happy when he left.”

  Garnett nodded. “I received a packet of papers on the trust fund a few days ago. Richard took Dominic off the account and put you on as her financial advisor but she now has full access to the funds. They are on your desk.”

  Meeks was slowly sipping his whisky and finally looked at James. “She’s been at the Plantation since January?”

  “She took the train home.”

  “Why did he leave her and Matthew there?”

  “Mirisa said it was better to have the baby there than in Texas.”

  Garnett looked at him before lighting his cigar. The evening sounds of the birds coming in to roost were the only sound as the sun went below the tree line.

  Meeks picked up the bottle filling his glass. “When is the baby due?”
